The ionosphere is a region of Earth’s atmosphere that is ionized by ultraviolet radiation from the sun. It extends from about 50 to 1,000 kilometers (30 to 620 miles) above Earth’s surface.

Key Layers of the Ionosphere

  • D Layer: The lowest layer of the ionosphere, located between 60 and 90 kilometers (37 and 56 miles) above Earth’s surface. It is responsible for the absorption of AM radio waves during the night.
  • E Layer: Located between 90 and 130 kilometers (56 and 81 miles) above Earth’s surface, the E layer is responsible for reflecting shortwave radio waves.
  • F Layer: The highest layer of the ionosphere, extending from 130 to 1,000 kilometers (81 to 620 miles) above Earth’s surface. It is divided into the F1 layer and the F2 layer. The F2 layer is the most important for long-distance radio communication.

The ionosphere is vital for radio communication, especially for shortwave and longwave radio waves. It reflects these waves back to Earth, allowing for long-distance transmission.   • Radio Astronomy: Scientists use radio telescopes to study astronomical objects by observing the radio waves they emit. The ionosphere can interfere with these observations, so astronomers often choose to observe at frequencies that are less affected by the ionosphere.
